AC-T: Asheville Child Watch tour highlights child poverty

From Asheville Citizen-Times:

Sen. Terry Van Duyn and Asheville Transit Committee chair Julie Mayfield struggled as single mothers to get care for their 3-year-old child Tuesday, and probably got fired from their jobs at Walmart.

Philanthropist Jennie Eblen was probably fired too, and former Mayor Terry Bellamy was forced to brave a sidewalk-less hill toting a sick toddler through the 80-plus degree heat.

The fictional mayhem was all part of the 17th annual Child Watch Tour, an event sponsored by the nonprofit Children First and the Junior League of Asheville. It is designed to highlight issues of poverty and other challenges affecting local children.

This year’s event focused on transportation, tasking more than 50 community leaders and elected officials with navigating public transit, traversing everyday scenarios for bus riders.

The scenarios were imagined, but the challenges were real.
