Fire departments struggle to attract volunteers

Area fire departments, and others across the nation, are looking for ways to reverse a trend of declining numbers of volunteer firefighters, but it’s a tough sell.
Higher training standards, expanded duties, an increasing number of emergency calls and a more transient workforce are making the fire service less attractive to volunteers, who traditionally have played a crucial role in community fire departments and annually save municipalities across the nation billions in personnel costs.
