Here’s an excerpt from the Asheville Citizen-Times article:
Buncombe County government is preparing to spend $10 million to build an indoor firing range here for law enforcement officers after abandoning the idea of constructing a cheaper one outdoors.
Sheriff Van Duncan said he would be happy with an outdoor range, but county officials have looked diligently for a site without success.
“No community wants an outdoor firing range in Buncombe County,” Duncan said.
Assuming the Board of Commissioners approves recommended funding in the county’s proposed 2013-14 budget, the range will be located at the Buncombe County Public Safety Training Facility off Riverside Drive.
Since the late 1990s, sheriff’s deputies have used property on the Biltmore Estate to practice shooting and take shooting tests they are required to pass annually, Duncan said.
