In an effort to address what he sees as needs in the department, which includes increasing the number of patrol officers, Buncombe County Sheriff Quentin Miller asked the board for additional funding to pay for 21 new positions and an increase in the number of vehicles that the county refreshes on an annual basis. The sheriff’s office anticipates that the requests would produce a total recurring cost of approximately $3.2 million per year.
In coming weeks, voters get to determine who will lead Buncombe County’s most powerful law enforcement and legal agencies. The candidates have staked out different positions on a wide variety of issues, setting up battle lines for what’s likely to be an intense last month of the campaign season.
Candidates for Buncombe County sheriff and district attorney faced off for the first time Sept. 25 at a forum held at the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce.
As filing ended at noon Feb. 28 for this year’s local elections, a flurry of candidates threw their hats into the ring. Two challengers, in different districts, will take on incumbent Democratic Buncombe County Commissioners, a Republican commissioner got another challenger and an opponent emerged for the current sheriff.

During the April 19 meeting, the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners heard a presentation about the impact of adult care homes in Buncombe County.
