ACLU of NC leads new federal lawsuit for same-sex marriage recognition in NC

Press Release

Equality NC

Friend of Equality — Breaking news! Just seconds ago, our friends at the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), the ACLU of North Carolina Legal Foundation (ACLU-NCLF) and the law firms of Sullivan & Cromwell LLP and Ellis & Winters LLP filed a new case in federal court on behalf of three married, same-sex couples seeking state recognition of their marriages. Because of the serious medical condition of one member of each couple, they are asking the court to take immediate action.

In doing so, they not only elevate the voices of more loving and committed North Carolina couples seeking marriage equality, but also seek a more swift resolution to the legal question of whether many of our state’s same-sex families facing immediate health concerns may avoid daily harm by finally having their relationships recognized.

This second North Carolina lawsuit puts additional pressure on federal courts to determine the fate of Amendment One, even as the controlling Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals prepares to take up Virginia’s marriage case in May 2014, in a ruling that could also topple North Carolina’s ban on the freedom to marry as early as this summer.

Equality NC applauds the work of the ACLU and ACLU-NCLF and will continue to work in tandem with their legal efforts to get the entire state engaged in this growing movement for marriage in North Carolina. Marriage is coming. Won’t you forward this amazing news to five of your friends, today?

For equality,
Chris Sgro
