The Asheville Regional Airport receives a boost as an airline that takes off and lands in Asheville between 2 and 5 days per week will begin basing two aircrafts at the airport next month. Allegiant specializes in shuttling people to and from warm sunny places. The company’s destinations currently available from Asheville are Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, Punta Gorda/Fort Myers, Tampa Bay, and West Palm Beach, Florida. The new status as a base may put Asheville in a favorable position for new routes although none have been announced at this time.

From an Asheville Regional Airport communique:

Beginning Sept. 1, Asheville Regional Airport (AVL) will become a new base for Allegiant operations, creating new jobs and poising the airport for growth. Allegiant will base two 166-seat MD-80 aircraft at AVL, creating an estimated 40 jobs for pilots, flight attendants and airport service personnel locally. Allegiant currently provides nonstop service from AVL to Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, Punta Gorda, Tampa and Palm Beach. With the airport as a new base of operations, AVL will be in a more favorable position for additional flights.
“We are excited to see continued growth by Allegiant at our region’s airport,” said Lew Bleiweis, Executive Director.  “Their low-cost non-stop options have been embraced by western North Carolina and visitors to our area, and now they are bringing jobs to our region.  Stay tuned for continued growth.”
