Andy Millard Campaign denounces proposed redistricting map

Press release from the Andy Millard Campaign:

February 17, 2016 – The campaign of Andy Millard, the Democratic nominee for Congress in North Carolina’s 10th district, released a statement condemning the state legislature’s proposed Congressional map which was made public Wednesday evening. The map was ordered to be redrawn by the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals after finding the 1st and 12th Congressional districts to be racially biased.

While the 1st, 12th, and surrounding districts were expected to be redrawn, the map released Wednesday showed all 13 districts had been redrawn. In addition to other changes to the 10th district, the map cuts a significant portion of Asheville – a Democratic stronghold – out of the district to give the establishment Republican incumbent Patrick McHenry a greater chance to win.

The statement from the Millard campaign reads: “The actions of the legislature are beyond the pale. They made it clear they would use this court ruling as an opportunity to give Republicans even better election prospects wherever possible, instead of making sure all North Carolinians had fair representation in Congress. That might be the only promise they’ve kept in Raleigh. Patrick McHenry is so entrenched in the Republican party establishment that he has his allies in the legislature working to make sure he never sees the unemployment office, unlike so many of his constituents have since he took office. It’s unconscionable.”

The Millard campaign is urging voters in the 10th Congressional district to call their state legislator and demand that they restore the original 10th district. Voters can get contact information for their legislator at www.ncleg.net.

Andy Millard is the Democratic nominee for Congress in North Carolina’s 10th congressional district. Millard is a financial planner, former school teacher and principal, and active member of numerous community organizations.
