Angel Medical Center to offer free diabetes ‘drive-thru’ clinic

Press release

From Angel Medical Center:

“This event will operate much the same way as our annual Flu Shot Clinic,” said Bonnie Peggs, AMC Director of Marketing & Public Relations. “The clinic involves a finger stick with diabetic results right away. Best of all it is free and no appointment is necessary.” Fasting is required for accurate testing. “Those that would like to participate should fast after midnight,” said Teresa Breedlove, MS,RD,LDN,CDE, Director of Nutrition. “However, you can have black coffee or water to drink after that time.” In addition, Angel Medical Center will have information on diabetes available for those that would like to learn more about the disease and simple lifestyle changes that can lower your risk of developing diabetes. “We especially encourage those people who are at high risk for diabetes to come to the clinic,” Breedlove continued. “There are several risk factors that increase the chance for becoming diabetic.” These risk factors include some racial and ethnic backgrounds including: African Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans, Asian Americans, and Pacific Islanders. Even if you don’t belong to one of these groups, you still may be at risk for diabetes. These factors apply to everyone: Do you have a family history of diabetes? Are you overweight? Are you over the age of 40? Did you have gestational diabetes (diabetes during pregnancy)? Are you a “couch potato” and do not get enough physical activity? “The staff of Angel Medical Center encourages everyone to take advantage of this free clinic. It will only take a few minutes of your day and those few minutes could prevent serious health problems,” Peggs concluded.
