APD arrests Asheville High student for having a shotgun on school grounds

Full announcement from the Asheville Police Department:

ASHEVILLE – On Thursday, 02-23-12, at approx. 3:58 pm, Asheville Police and School Resource Officers from Asheville High School responded to the upper parking lot of Asheville High located at 419 McDowell St. in reference to a report of a student brandishing a shotgun.

Officers were advised that a witness had observed a silver vehicle doing “donuts” in the parking lot. Witness then stated that the vehicle stopped and two males exited the car and the driver of the vehicle opened the trunk of the vehicle and pulled out a large shotgun and pumped the shotgun. The witness immediately notified the school of the situation.

With the information at hand, Asheville High immediately went into an emergency lockdown to limit the potential exposure of the remaining students at the school. Officers located the potential suspects in the upper lot as described by the witness, and secured the shotgun.

After interviewing both suspects in this matter, officers arrested Asheville High student, 17 year old Miles Roberts. Mr. Roberts advised officers that he wasn’t a threat to the school and that he had forgotten he had the weapon in his vehicle after going skeet shooting.

Mr. Roberts was charged with Poss. Of a Weapon on School Grounds and released on a custody bond to a family member.
