Asheville Habitat ReStore to donate portion of Nov. 17 sales to help Fayetteville homeowners affected by Hurricane Matthew

Press release from Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity:

ASHEVILLE, NC (November 10, 2016) – Habitat for Humanity ReStores across North Carolina and including Asheville, will donate a portion of their proceeds from sales on November 17th to help rebuild the 93 Fayetteville Habitat homes that sustained severe damage last month in the flooding from Hurricane Matthew.

ReStores in Asheville, Wake County, Charlotte, and many other areas have already implemented a “Round Up” program at registers. In Asheville, this initiative will run through December 31st. Customers are asked to “round up” their purchase price to the next $1 or $5 to help Fayetteville.

Additionally, Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity has put together two teams of volunteers who will travel to Fayetteville to help with clean-up and relief efforts.

Greg Kirkpatrick, executive director of Habitat for Humanity NC in Raleigh is coordinating the effort to get all 78 ReStores in North Carolina behind the drive to respond to the crisis in Fayetteville’s Habitat village.

“We asked the ReStores to consider doing something we’re calling ReStore Fayetteville,” said Kirkpatrick, who added that the response has been wildly enthusiastic. He hopes that the 78 ReStores across the state will raise as much as $100,000 for Fayetteville’s rebuilding efforts.

The 93 homes swamped by the flooding on October 8th represent more than half of the 154 houses built by Habitat Fayetteville over the past 30 years. Some of the flood victims are staying with friends or family; others have had to find rooms to rent.

But Tammy Laurence, director of Habitat Fayetteville, sees light amid the chaos that has engulfed the homeowners. “The support from our partner affiliates again reveals the best that Habitat calls out in each of us. Thanks to our Habitat partner affiliates, these funds will help us rebuild homes and restore hope. We are grateful. Hurricane Matthew tore through Fayetteville’s Habitat Village leaving broken hearts and broken homes. But the flood cannot quench the great spirit that animates these homeowners and this community. We will rebuild.”

Buncombe County residents are encouraged to help fellow North Carolinians in need by rounding up at the Asheville ReStore registers through December 31st, shopping at the ReStore on November 17th, or visiting ashevillehabitat.org to make an online donation. Click the Donate Now button and choose Hurricane Relief/Fayetteville Habitat in the Area of Support.
