Asheville Mayor and VA team up for a point in time count of people experiencing homelessness

Press release from the U.S. Department of Veteran’s Affairs:

Asheville Mayor Esther Manheimer and Cynthia Breyfogle, Charles George VA Medical Center director, will participate in the national annual Point-in-Time (PIT) count. The statewide count is conducted within a 24-hour period and gathers information about persons experiencing homelessness on one given night.

WHAT: Participate in a national PIT count to identify chronically homeless individuals within the Asheville/Buncombe County

WHO: Esther Manheimer, City of Asheville Mayor (Available for interviews)

Cynthia Breyfogle, Charles George VA Medical Center Director (Available for interviews)

WHEN: Wednesday, January 27 from 4 – 5:00 p.m.

WHERE: Veterans Restoration Quarters (1329 Tunnel Rd., Asheville, N.C. 28805)

WHY: As of the 2015 PIT count, there were 562 individuals identified as homeless in Buncombe County—207  of which were Veterans. An accurate PIT count is crucial to obtain accurate insight regarding progress the community has made to reduce the number of unsheltered homeless, highlighting areas that need to be improved, and identifying additional resources to address homelessness within the local community.
