Communication from Asheville Middle School Principal April Dockery:
May 17, 2019
Dear Asheville Middle School Families,
This was another amazing week at AMS. Our students and staff are working hard to finish the school year as strong as possible. This past week our Band, Strings and Chorus students and teachers did an amazing job during their spring concerts. Our students continue to amaze all of us with their talents.
On Thursday night, we honored our very own Ms. Howard as the ACS Child Nutrition employee of the year and Ms. Harrison as the ACS Bus Driver of the year during the Asheville City Schools Evening of Excellence. We are so proud of these amazing women and all they do for our school community.
Earlier today, the Buncombe County and Asheville City Middle School Success Network held their annual meeting. During that meeting, our Asheville Parent Leadership Program was a highlight, including the positive impact this program has had on our school community. We also discussed the importance of elevating our student voices in leadership in order to ensure our school community continues to thrive.
I have exciting news to share with you regarding our school campus.
The Asheville City Council approved the contract on April 23rd for turf installation on the athletic field at Asheville Middle School.
Today, I met with the Director of the Asheville Parks and Recreation Department Roderick Simmons. Our Superintendent Dr. Denise Patterson, Assistant Superintendent Dr. Mark Dickerson and Maintenance Director Don Sims were also in attendance. We discussed a timeline for the athletic field.
Although site preparation has begun, turf installation will begin on May 24th. It will continue on May 28th, 29th, 30th and 31st as well as June 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 10th and 11th. Construction will occur on these days from 12:30 PM into the evening. This will accommodate the student testing schedule.
Construction will continue on June 12th throughout the summer from 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM.
By working with the contractor and the Asheville Parks and Recreation Department, we have been able to adjust working hours to complete the project as soon as possible. The anticipated completion date is August 2nd, and our student-athletes can begin practicing on the field beginning August 3rd.
We also discussed the status of the AMS softball field. Site work has been completed, and the grass has been sown. Work is continuing on the dugouts and outfield fence.
Upon completion, Asheville Middle School will have an outstanding athletic facility for our students, school community and the City of Asheville.
As always thank you for all you do to make our community stronger – Cougar Pride!
April Dockery, Principal of Asheville Middle School
