Washington, D.C.– The Greater Asheville Regional Airport Authority has been awarded a $10.9 million discretionary grant by the U.S. Department of Transportation.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will allocate the funds, which will be used as part of a project to rehabilitate the airport’s runway system and to acquire an aircraft rescue and fire fighting vehicle.
“I am excited to hear that Asheville received this grant. Maintaining and growing a modernized transportation hub in Asheville is critical for our district’s business community and job growth,” said Congressman Mark Meadows (R-NC). “I am confident that the funds in this grant will allow our transportation officials to continue serving the citizens of Western North Carolina to the best of their abilities,” Meadows added.
The rehabilitation project for the airport’s runway has been a priority of the FAA to improve the airport’s infrastructure and ensure that the runway system meets construction standards. This grant is another step toward the completion of the project.
“Asheville Regional Airport continues to grow, and our airfield project is the biggest construction project since the airport was built and opened in 1961,” said Lew Bleiweis, A.A.E., executive director. “The FAA grant funding will help us complete this important project so the airport can continue to operate safely, efficiently and productively well into the future.”
The project will continue as part of a four phase plan to redevelop the airport.
