Benefit viola recital for Anastasia Yarbrough
Press release:
On Friday, April 25th, 2014 at 7 p.m. Anastasia Yarbrough is excited to host a benefit viola recital in order to help her realize her dream of obtaining her degree in music performance. The recital will be held at First Congregational United Church of Christ, 20 Oak Street, Asheville, NC, 28801.
Anastasia understands the value of a strong mentor. She grew up in the southside of Memphis, TN and was first introduced to the viola in the seventh grade. While she was learning to play in the Memphis public school system, her family could not afford to pay for private lessons. Her mentor, however, within the school took special interest in her talent and ability. According to Anastasia, “this teacher coached me for free because she really believed in my ability to offer a unique voice to music.”
While becoming a budding viola player, Anastasia was able to be a part of the Memphis Youth Symphony and play as a substitute violist in various other local orchestras. Through hard work and dedication, she was able to make the All-West Orchestra many times and sat third chair in the All-State Orchestra her senior year. Anastasia also had the privilege being a principal violist in the U.S. Scholar Athlete Games Orchestra in 2003. She is a recipient of ‘Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation’ grant, and she currently plays with the Blue Ridge Orchestra.
Anastasia works here in Asheville as a facilitator, musician, and educator who works primarily with communities of color to nurture the many possibilities for radical social transformation, individual healing, and ecological harmony. Recently Anastasia has decided to return to school to pursue a degree in music performance and has been accepted into the prestigious Hayes School of Music at Appalachian State University in Boone, NC. 100% of the proceeds from this benefit recital will be utilized to help her pay tuition and other school expenses. The fundraising goal for this event is $3,000.
LEAF Schools & Streets is proud to support Anastasia, one of its resident teaching artists. Anastasia currently teaches weekly music classes at Children First/CIS Learning Center at Pisgah View Apartments, where she has become a mentor for the local youth. She also serves on the board of LEAF Community Arts.
