Black Mountain Veteran Home celebrates 75th anniversary of Women Veterans Day

Press release from Pruitt Health:

Two local veterans from North Carolina State Veterans Home – Black Mountain were honored for their military service as part of the 75th anniversary of Women Veterans Day. Bernice Liverett and Patsy Phillips were presented with pins and gifts to commemorate the integration of women into the armed forces.

Andrea Allard, Director of Transition Services at the North Carolina Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, recognized the veterans during a special ceremony at the center on Monday, June 12. Patsy served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War from August 29, 1968, to March 26, 1971. Bernice served as a medical driver in the United States Army during World War II from May 10, 1944, to March 20, 1946. Members of the community were invited to witness the ceremony, with Ms. Liverett’s daughter in attendance.

The veterans were not the only ones who received gifts. Ms. Liverett, who turned 104 in January, gave everyone her tips for living long and staying young. “Go to bed early, wake up the next day, and eat a lot of cantaloupe,” Liverett said.
