Brevard to Hendersonville rail to trail study under way

According to the Hendersonville Times-News, Mike Oliphant, who lives in Hendersonville and is a faculty member at Brevard College, envisions the day when he can ride his bicycle to work — a dream commute full of fresh air and free of vehicular traffic.

Oliphant is president of the Friends of the Ecusta Trail, a grassroots, citizen action group whose goal is to see a rail-trail linking Hendersonville and Brevard become a reality. The proposed multi-use pathway along the inactive Norfolk Southern Ecusta rail line would span 18 miles from downtown Hendersonville to Brevard — connecting with other trails and greenways in those communities — bringing with it not only abundant recreational opportunities but also jobs, economic development and a better quality of life, organizers say. There is a long way to go, however, before the plan can be realized.
