Buncombe County partners pitch in 45 turkeys at the Pisgah View Fresh Food Pop-up

“One day with food is much better than one day without, and that’s why I’m here,” says Pop-Up volunteer Wakina Norris, as she makes phone calls to the 45 winners at a free turkey giveaway that took place within the Pisgah View Community on November 21st.

The Fresh Food Pop-Ups bring healthy, fresh foods into underserved communities where it is distributed to individuals and families. Pop-Ups are facilitated by a Community Service Navigator and volunteers from the community and is a partnership between Buncombe County Health and Human Services and Manna Foodbank. Along with having access to healthier foods, neighbors are able to connect with each other at these events, strengthening bonds within their community.

Volunteers in the Pisgah View community wanted to do something special for the residents, who have been so helpful with Pisgah View Pop-Up. Their search for 45 turkeys landed them at the Bi-Lo in Black Mountain where they connected with store manager, Gene Peters, who gladly pitched in.

“Giving makes a difference. We are grateful for people like Mr. Peters and the volunteers, who roll up their sleeves and make a difference,” says Robert Simmons, a Buncombe County Community Service Navigator. He continues, “Many in our community have to make tough choices every day. Sometimes it’s between a medication or food and sometimes they may days without eating. We know that what we are doing here today acknowledges those tough choices and gives a little extra breathing room to offset the challenge of figuring out where the next meal will come from.” As the residents came to pick up their turkey, countless smiles and hugs were exchanged between the residents and Pop-Up volunteers while the children busied themselves making crafts.

The Fresh Food Pop-Ups are one way to address food insecurity and build community. There are year round opportunities to help throughout Buncombe County. If you are interested in learning more about the Pop-Ups, contact Rasheeda McDaniels at (828) 250-5517.
