Buncombe Discovery Academy principal announced

Press Release

From Buncombe County Schools:

ASHEVILLE, NC – Today, Dr. Tony Baldwin, Superintendent of Schools, announced that Mr. Nathan Allison will be the principal for of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM)-themed high school, Buncombe Discovery Academy. Mr. Allison has been an assistant principal at A.C. Reynolds High School for the last eight years.

Believing that the Buncombe Discovery Academy will provide an inspiring level of academic innovation, Mr. Allison is confident this new school’s focus on STEM curriculum will lead to highly challenging and empowering learning environments and beneficial collaborative partner associations. “I am looking forward to establishing a faculty and staff, who are devoted to promoting an educational environment focused on student engagement and achievement. I am also eager to continue building the partnerships we have with our local businesses, industries, colleges and universities, and the community.”

Mr. Allison earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics from the University of North Carolina-Asheville and a Master of Arts degree in School Administration from Western Carolina University.

Commenting on how he envisions the exciting future of the new school, Mr. Allison said, “The Buncombe Discovery Academy will focus on an environment which is hands-on, promotes critical thinking, collaboration, inquiry, and is relevant to the ‘real-world’. In my opinion, the STEM philosophy is the perfect recipe for student success. I hope in the near future, this focus becomes the new tradition.”

Although North Carolina has historically had a strong business climate, the state is undergoing a critical economic transformation, moving rapidly from a low-skill, low-wage economy to a high-skill, knowledge-based economy driven by technology and innovation. These changes demand an adaptable workforce – one with the STEM skills embedded within the critical 21st Century proficiencies required for successful citizenship.
