Press Release
Carolina Jews for Justice
Sunday, October 26, Jewish communities across North Carolina will fight back against the General Assembly’s restrictions on voting rights. Coordinated by Carolina Jews for Justice, a statewide nonprofit, volunteers from major Jewish institutions in Raleigh, Durham, Asheville, and Greensboro will invest hundreds of hours in a “Day of Action,” phone banking to get voters to the polls. The effort will particularly target African American voters and newly registered voters, two groups disproportionately affected by controversial election rules passed by the General Assembly last year.
Bend the Arc, a national Jewish advocacy organization, is also joining the effort, recruiting volunteers to contribute additional calls from around the country. Both organizations are engaged in a long-term effort to lift restrictions on voting rights, and to restore equal access to the ballot box.
The flagship phone bank will be held at Temple Beth Or in Raleigh as part of the congregation’s Mitzvah Day, a day of community service, which draws more than 400 volunteers annually. Organizers from Carolina Jews for Justice expect the effort to reach thousands of voters in key demographic groups, particularly newly registered voters who may need help voting for the first time.
Other participating organizations are Beth Meyer Synagogue in Raleigh, Judea Reform in Durham, Congregation Beth HaTephila in Asheville, Jewish Federation/Jewish Family Services of Greensboro, and Beth David Synagogue and Temple Emanuel in Greensboro.
