Carolina Day Upper school math and physics teacher Dr. Hope Concannon has been chosen as a consultant by the National Math and Science Initiative (NMSI) and its partners to give support
to newer AP Statistics teachers and their students by presenting at a number of all-day student study sessions, the most recent of which was in Oklahoma City.
Dr. Concannon says, “The goal of these sessions involves ensuring that both teachers and students are familiar with all of the material in the AP Statistics curriculum, that they are also familiar with the structure of the AP
exam, and have practiced many sample problems. This makes them aware of how the test is graded and which student responses earn full credit.” Many of the school districts Concannon
is working with are in economically disadvantaged regions or have a high population of military families, and for these students the opportunity to take an advanced math class in high school is
still both rare and new.
As stated on their website, the National Math and Science Initiative (NMSI) is a non-profit organization created in 2007 by leaders in American business, education, and science. One of
the ways NMSI is raising the academic bar in American public schools is by funding programs that have demonstrated success in helping more students succeed in college-level Advanced
Placement math, science, and English courses.”
Dr. Concannon has been teaching upper level math and physics courses at Carolina Day School since 1998. She earned her Ph.D from Duke University.
Dr. Concannon was my Calc BC teacher at Carolina Day in 1999. Enjoyed the class. It was a rude awakening when I got to college and found the quality of instruction to be much lower…
Hope taught me in physics at Asheville School. While she failed to teach me physics, she sure taught me how to make toys!
