Reynolds Mom Seeks Election to Buncombe County School Board

Cindy McMahon of Haw Creek announced today that she will seek election to the Buncombe County School Board.

McMahon and her husband, John, have a son and daughter, Caleb and Katie, at A. C. Reynolds High School.

“They have both been in Buncombe County Schools since kindergarten and have had an excellent education at every level,” McMahon said. “My husband and I are also products of public schools. We have all benefited so much, and I would like to use my leadership skills and experience to give back to our schools.”

McMahon is a consultant specializing in business and project management. She is the current Vice Chair of the Board of Commissioners of the Housing Authority of the City of Asheville.

“I want to use my experience in budgeting, capital projects, and human resources to help make our schools even stronger. I enjoy coming together with others to solve problems, and would like to use those skills to advocate for the students in our public schools.”

There are 42 schools in the Buncombe County school district, serving more than 25,500 students. It is the largest school system in Western North Carolina, the eleventh largest system in the state, and the second largest employer in Buncombe County, employing nearly 4,000 people. BCS has an annual budget of $244.5 million.

The Buncombe County School Board consists of seven elected members. The board supervises the superintendent, sets policy, and oversees the county schools budget. There are six districts, each with one representative, plus one at-large member. All representatives are elected district-wide. The election is nonpartisan and there is no primary. The General Election is Tuesday, November 4. McMahon would represent the Reynolds District.

“We need to continue to raise the bar and set expectations for the highest level of services to our students and their families.”

McMahon earned a bachelor’s degree in English and Philosophy from Guilford College, a Master’s degree in English from UNC-Chapel Hill, and a Certificate in Nonprofit Management from Duke University.
