Press release from city of Asheville:
ASHEVILLE – Asheville City Manager Gary Jackson announced on Friday that he is calling for an outside audit of Asheville Police Department citations issued using radar guns over the last three years. This will involve a review of all radar units, as well as the certification of the officers using them.
This is in keeping with the greater scrutiny already underway as outlined in the APD’s Strategic Operating Plan, Jackson said.
“As an issue of public trust, it is crucial to make sure we get accurate and accountable information,” Jackson said.
The announcement follows the information that some radar guns used by the department were no longer certified or may have had a lapse in which they were not certified. Training on uncertified radar guns could impact the certification of officers using them as well as the status of traffic citations.
On Friday, Asheville Police Chief William Anderson expressed his support for the audit.
“Given what we have learned to date we feel that it would be beneficial to go back this extended period of time to get a full and accurate picture,” Anderson said.
The contract with a public accounting firm is anticipated to be in place by the end of next week, and the audit is projected to take approximately six months. Details on the audit process will be released once the outside audit team is in place.
