The City of Asheville will not be providing leaf collection bags to residents this leaf season. In order for residents to have leaves collected, they can place leaves in untied bags or reusable containers marked “leaves.” These leaves will be collected twice per month. For more details and information regarding collection days, see the information provided from the City of Asheville below.
Press release from the City of Asheville:
ASHEVILLE – As leaves begin to fall, the City reminds residents that it collects residential leaves and brush from bags or bins placed on the curb. For residents with a Monday or Tuesday trash collection day, your bagged leaves will be collected on the first and third week of each month. For residents with a Wednesday or Thursday collection day, your bagged leaves will be collected on the second and fourth weeks of each month. Untied bags should be set at the curb by 7 a.m. on the Monday of your scheduled collection week.
Residents can place their leaves in paper or plastic bags, and bins may be used if they are clearly labeled “leaves” or “brush.” The City requests that residents do not tie them off or workers will have to rip the bags open to remove the leaves. Instead, bags should be left open. After removing the leaves, City workers will leave the bags on the curb to be reused.
“We will do our best to leave bags in a way that minimizes them being blown away by wind or traffic,” said Public Works Director Greg Shuler.
Paper and plastic bags are available for purchase at most home improvement stores, grocery and department stores.
Brush and leaf pick up schedules can be found on the City of Asheville’s Sanitation Division web page (ashevillenc.gov/Sanitation/BrushandLeafCollection).

From the City of Asheville 2015-2016 Leaf Collection Information:
The city WILL NOT provide leaf collection bags to residents for this leaf season. This initiative was an introductory measure taken to assist residents with the transaction from loose leaf vacuum collection to bagged only collection.
To ensure your leaves are collected, please place your leaves in untied bags or a reusable container marked “leaves.” Bagged leaves are collected twice per month and should be placed to the curb by 7:00 a.m. on the Monday of your collection week. Brush and bagged leaves are collected twice per month.
Your assistance with ensuring your leaves are properly prepared is appreciated. For further assistance please refer to the below list of frequently asked questions or call (828) 251-1122.
How has the City’s leaf collection process changed?
Since the initiative of providing leaf bags was an introductory measure, the City of Asheville will no longer provide leaf bags at the local fire departments for residents. Residents must place leaves in untied bags that can be purchased from any local store or a reusable container. Bags should be set at the curb by 7:00 a.m. on the Monday of your scheduled collection week.
How often will my bagged leaves be collected?
For residents with a Monday or Tuesday trash collection day, your bagged leaves will be collected on the first and third week of each month. For residents with a Wednesday or Thursday collection day, your bagged leaves will be collected on the second and fourth weeks of each month. Untied bags should be set at the curb by 7:00 a.m. on the Monday of your scheduled collection week.
Can I compost my leaves instead of bagging them?
Yes! Composting is the natural process of decomposition and recycling of organic material into a rich soil product known as compost. Creating a compost pile in your yard is a practical and convenient way to handle yard wastes, like fallen leaves, grass clippings, weeds, and garden plants. Compost also improves soil and the plants growing in it. If you have a garden, lawn, trees, shrubs, or even planter boxes, you have a use for compost.
What else can I do to reduce the amount of leaves I need to bag?
Consider mowing your lawn more frequently. Mowing, especially with mulching mowers, helps return natural nutrients back into the soil without harmful chemicals and cuts down on the need to bag your leaves.
What happens to my leaf bags?
Bags and containers will be left at your residence for you to reuse.
What if I cannot bag my leaves?
