Full announcement from the city of Asheville:
ASHEVILLE- The City of Asheville will hold a kick-off event for the launch of the Zero Waste AVL Recycling Program Monday, March 5, at 10 a.m. at the West Asheville Park Pavilion, located at 198 Vermont Ave.
The launch will correspond with the first neighborhood delivery of the new 96-gallon roll carts which will begin on March 5 and will be completed in phases, according to neighborhood, throughout the month. In addition, the launch will celebrate the release of “Big Blue,” a unique-to-Asheville video produced just for the new Zero Waste AVL program.
The upgraded service allows residents to recycle household materials previously not accepted, and provides a much larger 96-gallon BLUE recycling roll cart for the safe and clean collection of a greater volume of recyclables. Recycling will require no sorting, so all household recyclable glass, plastic, metal, paper and cardboard will be placed into a new BIG BLUE 96-gallon roll cart.
With the new recycling program, city residents will now be able to recycle plastic food containers, from Plastics #1 through Plastics #7, and their plastic lids and caps, as well as refrigerated and unrefrigerated cartons. Recycling demonstrations and detailed program information will be provided at the event.
Successfully piloted in Asheville last year, the Zero Waste AVL program consistently demonstrated increased amounts of recycling across four pilot neighborhoods, decreasing the volume of trash going to the landfill.
