Course registration for community classes at Brevard College extended to Jan. 24

There is still time to register for upcoming Brevard College non-credited community education classes, which include health, recreation, self-improvement, skill-building and lifelong learning.

Course registration has been extended through Friday, January 24.

Community members who register for Spring 2014 classes by January 15 will receive 10 percent off course registration fee(s). Participants who have already registered for one or more course(s) will receive 15 percent off the registration fees for any additional courses for which they register. The Great Decisions lecture series and the Rejuvenate Your Retirement course are excluded.

Several spots remain in classes such as Fundamentals of Drawing I and II, Beginning Guitar I and II and the History of Jazz series as well as Zumba Fitness, Basic Yoga, Gentle Yoga, Soccer After School for Kids and Introduction to the Argentine Tango. Openings are also available in The Hub’s Bicycle Maintenance and Repair, Rejuvenate Your Retirement, the Writers Workshop for All Skill Levels, and the History and Development of Brevard and Rosman, among others.

A few highlights of new classes include Zumba Fitness, which combines culture and upbeat world rhythms such as reggaeton, salsa, merengue, hip–hop, eumbia, and many other styles, with easy to follow choreography to provide a total body workout during every session. Jaime McCormick, a popular local instructor who is licensed in Zumba instruction, is offering three sections of the course. All sections meet on Mondays from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., with section one spanning January 13 through February 10, section two spanning February 17 through March 17, and section three spanning March 24 through April 28. Each class will meet in the Boshamer Gymnasium Movement Room. The cost is $45 for one section.

“Soccer After School: A Program for Kids” is a basic soccer skills course, instructed by Brevard College Women’s Soccer Assistant Coach Marisa Muller. This course provides kids, ages 6–10, with an opportunity to develop basic soccer skills, learn the value of team work, and have an opportunity to play the sport they love with other youth in the community. This course meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., January 21 through February 6, in the Boshamer Auxiliary Gymnasium. The cost is $50.

Beginning Guitar I is a course designed to provide basic instruction in the skills and techniques needed to perform chords, strumming, and simple accompaniment to songs. Course topics include tuning, instrument care, playing of chords, fingerpicking, strumming, and rhythm. No prior experience is necessary.

Beginning Guitar II course is a continuation course of Guitar I and will provide basic instruction in the skills and techniques needed to read music and tablature, play scales, explore musical styles, and understand basic music theory. The cost for each Guitar course is $55 or $99 for both.

Historically popular courses that are returning this spring include such classes as “Rejuvenate Your Retirement” and the Great Decisions lecture series. Rejuvenate Your Retirement is a comprehensive course that covers key issues for retirees, including tax reduction planning, investment risk management, health care planning, estate planning, and new ways to stay mentally, physically, and socially active. Larry Stringer, the instructor, will offer two sections of this course. The first section will meet from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 11th and Tuesday, March 18 in the Kaplan Auditorium at the Hendersonville County Public Library. The second section will meet from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, March 20 and Thursday, March 27 in the Brevard College Dining Hall Institute Room. The cost is $39 per section, which includes a workbook supply fee. Participants can also bring a spouse or guest for an additional $10, if willing to share a workbook

The very popular “Great Decisions” lecture series, sponsored by the Foreign Policy Association, is also returning this spring with a new selection of topics. Lectures include: Economic statecraft and Trade by Dr. Debra Sabia of Georgia Southern University (Feb 5); Defense and the Rise of New Technologies by Maj. Gen. Rick Devereaux, Ret. USAF and Consultant (Feb 12); Food Security and Climate Change by Dr. Amy Knisley of Warren Wilson College (Feb 19); China’s Foreign Policy by Dr. Jim Lenburg of Mars Hill University (emeritus) and Osher Lifelong Learning Institute board chair (Feb 26); Turkey (A Nation at a Crossroads) by Dr. Samer Traboulsi of UNC-Asheville (Mar 5); and Israel (Strained Alliance) by Dr. Heather Hawn of Mars Hill University (Mar 12).
