Dr. Caroline Wellbery presents “Why the Arts and Humanities Matter to Medicine” at UNCA, Nov. 13

Dr. Caroline Wellbery, a physician who also holds a Ph.D in comparative literature, will present a lecture, The Other Side of the Story: Why the Arts and Humanities Matter to Medicine at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13 in UNC Asheville’s Karpen Hall, Laurel Forum. This free, public talk is part of UNC Asheville’s “Engaged Humanities” lecture series, exploring the continuing importance of the traditional humanities disciplines for the problems of the 21st century.

Wellbery is an associate professor of family medicine at the Georgetown University School of Medicine, and associate deputy editor of American Family Physician magazine. Her research interests include using the arts to teach the many aspects of patients’ experiences. Her website, Interacting with the Medical Humanities, offers stories from the perspective of both patients and doctors, as well as artistic representations of illness and suffering.
