Dr. John Bryant named new HCPS Superintendent

Press release from Henderson County Public Schools:

Dr. John M. Bryant will succeed Bo Caldwell as Henderson County Public Schools’ sixth superintendent, effective December 1, the Henderson County Board of Public Education announced Tuesday during the regular monthly school board meeting.

Bryant is the Associate Superintendent for Administrative Services, and like his predecessor, has a rich history in HCPS and as an educator. Upon earning his Bachelor of Arts in English Education from Elon University in 1999, Bryant taught English for four years at Southern Alamance High School in Graham, N.C., and then in Florida at Apopka High School from 2003 to 2006.

In 2006, Bryant returned to teaching English in Western North Carolina at East Henderson High School – where he then served as Assistant Principal and Athletic Director from 2007 to 2011. Bryant served as Principal at Glenn C. Marlow Elementary from 2011-2014, before transferring to Central Office in 2014 as Senior Director of Human Resources.

Bryant’s superintendency begins December 1, following Caldwell’s retirement on November 30.

“I believe the single most important job of a member of the Board of Education is that of hiring the Superintendent. I cannot think of a better person to lead us into the future than Dr. John Bryant,” said School Board Chair Blair Craven. “He is a well-known treasure in our community and we are thrilled that he will bring his vision and energy to the Superintendent position for Henderson County Public Schools.”

And advocate for public education in this community and statewide, Bryant is a member of the North Carolina Association of School Administrators, Personnel Administrators of North Carolina, School Superintendents Association, North Carolina High School Athletics Association, Kappa Delti Pi education honor society and Sigma Tau Delta international English honor society.

Locally, Bryant also currently serves on the Board of Directors at Pardee Hospital, on the Board of Directors for the YMCA of WNC, as a member of the Executive Board of the United Way of Henderson County, and as a member of the Henderson County Transportation Advisory Committee.

Bryant holds a Masters in School Administration from Gardner Webb University and an EdD in Educational Leadership from Western Carolina University. He is the proud husband of Lisa K. Bryant, Producing Artistic Director at Flat Rock Playhouse.
