Economic Services receives $7 million infusion for emergency rental assistance

Press release from Buncombe County:

Buncombe County Economic Services is poised to reboot Emergency Rental Assistance with more than $7 million in funding. The Board of Commissioners approved a budget amendment accepting funding from the state’s federal allocation of NC Pro Emergency Rental Assistance 2 in the amount of $7,980,669.

Following a pause in providing emergency rental assistance in September of 2022, the program is now accepting applications. Community members who need financial assistance with rent, mortgage, or utilities and have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic may apply for financial assistance starting Jan. 4.

“If you think you may possibly qualify, please call our office at 250-5500 to learn more,” said Economic Services Director Phillip Hardin. “Financial assistance is available immediately to support our community members impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic who need help with rent, mortgage, or utilities.”

The allowable administrative cost for this award is 5% ($399,033) and will continue to support three temporary grant positions in HHS Finance and provide contracted services for caseworker positions for approximately 15 months. These funds expire Sept. 30, 2025, and the County expects to distribute funds by April 2024.
