From press release:
The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (DPI) today announced that 78 schools have been recognized as a Title 1 Reward School for 2014-15. Eight of the schools are from the Buncombe County School System. The BCS schools earning the Reward School designation are:
Black Mountain Elementary School,
Black Mountain Primary School,
Haw Creek Elementary School,
North Buncombe Elementary School,
Pisgah Elementary School,
Avery’s Creek Elementary School,
Estes Elementary School
and Weaverville Elementary School
Pisgah Elementary competes to represent North Carolina in the national Title 1 Distinguished Schools Program.
“This recognition is very much appreciated for all the tireless work, dedication, and commitment that all of our teachers, staff, and administrators so generously give to our students every day,” said Dr. Anita Owenby, Director of Federal Programs. “We believe students from all walks of life can learn and achieve, and it is incredibly encouraging for these eight schools to be recognized for their students’ successes.”
According to the Department of Public Instruction, the schools were selected based on assessment data from the 2012-13 and 2013-14 school year.
A “reward school” is a Title I school that is:
• A “highest-performing school” which is a school among the top ten percent of Title I schools in the State that have the highest absolute performance over a number of years for the “all students” group and for all subgroups on the statewide assessments; or
• A “high-progress school” which is a school among the ten percent of Title I schools in the State that are making the most progress in improving the performance of the “all students” group over a number of years on the statewide assessments.
The top 10 percent of the Reward Schools are invited to submit portfolios to identify the best practices contributing to the school’s success. Portfolios are peer reviewed by members of the Title I Distinguished Schools Advisory Council with on-site visits conducted to determine one school for each category to represent North Carolina in the national Title I Distinguished Schools Program.
