Fairview daylily sale to benefit Child Abuse Prevention Services

Press Release

Child Abuse Prevention Services, Inc.

On Friday, June 27 from 3 to 8, and Saturday June 28 from 9 to 3.  Cheryl and Doug Alderman are opening their award-winning daylily gardens in Fairview to the public for a daylily sale to benefit Child Abuse Prevention Services, Inc.  The MLNCFA garden is an official display garden of the American Hemerocallis Society.

An added treat this year is that the National Hemerocallis (Daylily) Society is holding their annual convention in Asheville that weekend with 600 plus people expected.

Rare and unusual plants in beautiful colors will be available for $2 up to $10, on Sharon Road off Upper Brush Creek Rd. (8 miles out 74A East from the Blue Ridge Parkway, right on Upper Brush Creek at the Fairview 66 station, 1 mile to Sharon Road). “This is a great opportunity to see and purchase beautiful daylily plants and at the same time benefit our local child abuse prevention program”, said Cheryl Alderman. “This year I’m also promoting a Get Some Give Some aspect – if your own garden is getting choked with daylilies that have multiplied, I’ll happily accept donations at the sale.  There will also be clumps, great for landscaping and berms for $10.”

Alderman has raised and donated over $30,000 to Child Abuse Prevention Services, Inc. through her annual daylily sale, and was recognized as a Hometown Hero and as one of  The 10 Who Care in the Asheville Citizen-Times for her efforts in helping to improve child well being and make the community a better place to live.

“Working together and with the help of friends and supporters like the Aldermans, we can make a difference”, said Bill McGuire, Director of Child Abuse Prevention Services, Inc., “and hopefully one day all children – our most previous yet most vulnerable resource – can have a safe, healthy childhood and the opportunity to reach their potential.  We’re really grateful to Cheryl Alderman.”

Child Abuse Prevention Services, Inc. (CAPS) which served 10,000 individuals last year works to reduce / prevent abuse, strengthen families and assist children who have experienced abuse through personal safety education / outreach, parenting education, and crisis intervention / counseling.

“Support like this not only helps our school-based abuse prevention/personal safety program”, said McGuire, “but also helps to provide counseling for children who have experienced abuse – including the 8-year-old girl who was hiding in the closet and didn’t want to go to school, tearfully telling her mother about being assaulted on the school bus.  Or, the 2nd grader who raised her hand in our prevention program to report sexual abuse from both her parents. Or, the 7-year-old boy whose mother’s boyfriend put him in a clothes dryer and turned it on.  All these children found a safe place at CAPS and received counseling to help them cope with the abuse.
