ASHEVILLE – Western North Carolina likely is headed toward a less-than-spectacular fall leaf season unless weather conditions become considerably drier.
Consistent rain over much of the year means mountain soils are holding plenty of moisture, which is good for trees’ health overall but bad for leaf color, says Kathy Mathews, Western Carolina University’s resident leaf color prognosticator.
