Press release from Blue Ridge Parkway:
On October 23, 2019, at approximately 1:15 p.m., Blue Ridge Parkway Law Enforcement Rangers responded to a fall injury in the parking area located at Milepost 352.4. Upon arrival rangers discovered William “Willie” Keith, age 80, of Durham, North Carolina, had lost his footing, fell back in the grass, and hit his head.
Mr. Keith never regained consciousness after the fall and was airlifted to Johnson City Medical Center. On October 24, 2019, Parkway rangers learned that Mr. Keith had succumbed to the injuries sustained during the previous day’s fall. The initial investigation indicates that Mr. Keith likely suffered a medical emergency initially causing the fall.
