Federal money for new police may be harder to get this year

According to the Asheville Citizen-Times, Asheville interim police Chief Wade Wood says his department will see a “huge benefit” from the $711,255 federal grant it won last year.

The money, awarded through the Community Oriented Policing Services grant program, will allow the department to hire five new police officers — something it hasn’t been able to do for a while.
