Firefighters from nine departments battled a fire in Edneyville Tuesday morning that destroyed three businesses, including Griffin’s Grocery.
Regina Fowler, who was living in an apartment attached to the business, called 911 after her smoke detector went off around 2:30 a.m., Edneyville Fire Chief Robert Griffin said. Fowler was able to escape without injury, but lost everything she owned in the fire.
The fire started in Griffin’s Cafe, which is part of the same building with the grocery store, Chief Griffin said. The fire spread through the attic to all three businesses. When fire crews first arrived on the scene, the cafe was on fire, and heavy black smoke was coming out of the entire building, Griffin said.
