Float beyond coal this Sunday Oct. 14 at 2p.m. in Lake Julian

Press release

from The Sierra Club

More than a dozen boats will form a flotilla on Lake Julian in front of Duke Energy’s Asheville Coal Plant (previously owned by Progress Energy), with giant banners urging the company to move beyond coal.

Dozens of people are expected to attend the event and participate in the flotilla, which will form directly in front of the coal plant on the lake. Representatives from sponsoring groups will make statements to attendees, talking about Lake Julian, and the multiple coal ash ponds that sit above the French Broad River. This event comes just days after groups filed a legal complaint at the NC Environmental Management Commission to require Duke clean-up of toxic coal ash ponds.

Sponsoring groups include Western North Carolina Alliance, Sierra Club, French Broad Riverkeeper, Watauga Riverkeeper, and SouthWings.
