A free photo essay exhibit up through the end of the year at Pack Memorial Library in Asheville offers views of parenting from the parents of young children who attend Asheville City Schools Preschool. A news release below from Buncombe Partnership for Children offers details:
Photovoice, a photo essay exhibit titled: Parenting is Hard—Let’s do It Together, is now on display at Pack Memorial Library in Asheville through December 2015.
Photovoice is a process in which people – usually those with limited power due to poverty, language barriers, race, class, ethnicity, gender, culture, or other circumstances – use photo images to capture aspects of their environment and experiences and share them with others.
The photos in the Parenting is Hard—Let’s do It Together exhibit were shot by parents of young children who attend Asheville City Schools Preschool. The photos are captioned with conversations with the parents helping bring the realities of the photographers’ lives home to the community.
Buncombe Partnership for Children and Triple P Positive Parenting Program coordinators facilitated the Photovoice process.
Below are some details:
Through photo assignments and guided discussions, we learned more about what it’s like to parent in our community. Through photos and excerpts of conversations, the exhibit shares parent reflections on these ideas:
· We all want to protect our children from outside influences
· The days [as a parent of a young child] are long
· The world is quick to judge our children and our parenting
· How does living in poverty add to this challenge?
· What helps?
The mission of Buncombe Partnership for Children is to strengthen the capacity of educators, families, and the community to build a strong foundation for children’s learning and development, beginning at birth. www.buncombepfc.org
