Here’s the press release:

Free Tax Preparation for Families Earning Less than $50,000

(Western North Carolina) – OnTrack Financial Education & Counseling’s Free Tax Preparation Program offers free tax preparation to households earning less than $50,000. Already in 2012, the program has helped over 252 working families in WNC complete their taxes for free, resulting in over $480,000 in refunds.
“We feel so comfortable with the staff and volunteers at OnTrack WNC, and we know our tax return will be accurate and that the tax preparers work hard to make sure we get all the credits we are eligible for. We always leave OnTrack WNC feeling better than when we came in,” commented one young family utilizing the free tax prep program. With two preschoolers, the family of four had a total Adjusted Gross Income of $18,598. Both parents were in school, working on degrees, and maintaining jobs. Last year, their refund was more than $10,000 because of the Earned Income Tax Credit, Making Work Pay Credit and other tax deductions/credits.

National statistics demonstrate that free tax preparation is an effective tool to help consumers avoid tax refund anticipation loans or other predatory products. OnTrack WNC’s professional tax preparers offer the invaluable service of accurate, free, and confidential tax preparation, helping clients receive their full benefit.

“Getting your taxes completed early and for free is an excellent way to increase your resources in these hard times.  The benefit is great – saving at least $200 in tax preparation fees – and knowing that OnTrack WNC’s tax preparers will work to maximize your available refund,” commented Celeste Collins, OnTrack WNC Executive Director.
OnTrack WNC’s program is offered free thanks to grant support from EITC Carolinas, The City of Asheville (CDBG), the United Way of Asheville-Buncombe County, and the 2012 project sponsors: Dixon Hughes, PLLC, Gabler Molis & Company, PA, Gould Killian CPA Group, Johnson Price Sprinkle PA, NC Association of CPAs, Carter Accounting & Consulting, Chad T. Storck, CPA, P.C., and Sullivan & Sullivan PLLC.
“In addition to providing free tax preparation for low-income households, OnTrack WNC also offers financial services ranging from budget counseling and debt management to homebuyer education,” commented Collins. “When a client discovers they will be receiving a tax refund, we can assist them in planning how to spend their refund wisely; if there is a tax payment due, we can help evaluate their budget to meet their tax and other financial obligations.”
