Harvey Gantt visiting WCU to keynote Friday symposium focusing on NC

Harvey Gantt, former mayor of Charlotte and candidate for the U.S. Senate, will be the keynote speaker for a Friday, April 10, symposium at Western Carolina University titled “North Carolina in Dialogue: Our Past, Present and Future.”

The daylong event will bring a lineup of distinguished scholars and public activists and intellectuals to campus who will offer perspectives on North Carolina’s history, politics and culture. Gantt will speak at 6:30 p.m. in the Grandroom of A.K. Hinds University Center.

Panel sessions will address issues such a public education, farming and foodways, social change, and politics and voting rights. Panelists will include June Atkinson, N.C. superintendent of public instruction; and Elizabeth Engelhardt, the John Shelton Reed Professor of Southern Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
