Haywood County investigates fatal home explosion

Press release from the Haywood County Sheriff’s Office:

An investigation is underway into the cause of a fatal home explosion that happened on Zurich Lane in Haywood County in the early morning hours of Thursday, Sept. 20.

Haywood County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched at approximately 4:45 a.m. to the 200 block of Zurich Lane in reference to a fully involved structure fire.  Upon arrival to the scene, firefighters were already actively involved in firefighting procedures.

A person was discovered deceased at the residence at approximately 6:35 a.m. A spokesperson for the Haywood County Sheriff’s Office said the identity of the decedent will not be released until after an autopsy is conducted Friday morning.

The Haywood County Sheriff’s Office is working in conjunction with North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation fire investigators to determine the cause and origin of the explosion.
