Dr. Daniel Gwan-Nulla of Haywood Regional Medical Center, recently presented his video of a leading edge procedure which he performed at Haywood Regional Medical Center, at the 2017 Society of Thoracic Surgeons Annual Meeting in Houston, Texas. The filmed discussion was entitled, “VATS Repair of Recurrent Congenital Bochdalek Hernia with Intrathoracic Herniation of the Kidney and Portion of the Pancreas.” Dr. Gwan-Nulla was joined in the discussion by Joel Dunning of James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough, United Kingdom, and Colin Schieman of the University of Calgary, Canada. The panelists presented the repair technique and shared tips for the VATS approach with leading thoracic surgeons from around the county. VATS is a minimally invasive surgical technique used to diagnose and treat problems in organs within the chest such as the lungs and is being performed at Haywood Regional Medical Center. During VATS, a tiny camera (thoracoscope) and surgical instruments are inserted into the chest through small incisions or ports in the chest wall. VATS offers numerous benefits over the traditional open approach to early state lung cancer treatment. These include: less postoperative pain, better immune system response, better chance of breathing normally, and a faster recovery.
Dr. Daniel Gwan-Nulla is Board Certified in both Thoracic Surgery and General Surgery. He performs most major and minor surgical procedures. As a thoracic (chest) surgeon, he is a specialist in the surgical treatment of lung cancer, esophageal cancer, esophageal reflux disease, and other diseases of the chest.
Dr. Gwan-Nulla also performs many vascular (blood vessel) procedures, including carotid surgery and bypass for blocked arteries. He has a particular interest in surgical access for dialysis, including hemo and peritoneal dialysis. Dr. Gwan-Nulla attended medical school at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, completed his Internship and Residency at the Milton Hershey – Penn State University Medical Center and was Chief Resident in Cardiothoracic Surgery at Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, Michigan. Dr. Gwan-Nulla resides in Haywood County with his wife, Dr. Meesha Gwan-Nulla (Internal Medicine) and their three children. He enjoys jogging, spending time with his family and doing mission work in Africa.
