(HENDERSONVILLE, NC, February 8, 2015) –   Those who are interested in trees and how to take care of them are invited to an informative training session sponsored by Hendersonville Tree Board.  “Be A Tree Helper:  A Volunteer Training Session” will be held on Tuesday, February 24, at 6 p.m. at Hendersonville Library auditorium on Washington St. in downtown Hendersonville.  The program is open to the public, including families, students, and those trained in or interested in urban forestry.  No special training is required.

Participants will hear about the Tree Board and how it was established, its purpose and past accomplishments, and what projects are available where assistance is needed.  Future programs will include guided tree walks to learn more about Hendersonville’s urban forest, a discussion on pruning trees and proper mulching techniques, which trees grow best in an urban environment, and more.  Volunteers may assist with tree plantings for public enjoyment, be assigned trees to help maintain and care for, help with tree surveys, and work with the Tree Board and residents to encourage good urban forestry techniques.

Hendersonville Tree Board is commissioned by the City of Hendersonville to study, investigate, counsel, develop and/or update and administer a written plan for the care, preservation, pruning, planting, replanting, removal, or disposition of trees and shrubs in parks, along streets and in other public areas.  The Tree Board educates the public as to the economic and aesthetic benefits of trees and shrubs to Hendersonville and its citizens.

“Most local residents have trees on their property, but often don’t know much about them,” Tree Board chair Mac Brackett said.  “This session offers opportunities to both help take care of public trees and to learn more about tree maintenance to better care for your own urban forest.  Hendersonville is one of nine Sterling Tree Communities in the state – Sterling Communities are regarded as leaders in community forestry and are often looked upon as innovators.  We are pleased to involve residents in caring for trees in our town and community.”

In case of the library closing due to inclement weather, the program will be rescheduled.
