Hendersonville nonprofit supports community members with ‘unique abilities’

Press release

From Ability Shirts:

Ability Shirts is a nonprofit organization based in Hendersonville, N.C. that supports individuals with “unique abilities.” Adam Farris, Director of Ability Shirts, prefers to use the term to categorize those who are considered to have disabilities. His shirts, which are printed in North Carolina, bear the slogan, “No one has a (dis)ability, everyone has abilities.” Adam’s unique abilities give him the perspective to lead a nonprofit dedicated to serving those who share them. Ability Shirts currently sells t-shirts, sweatshirts, and wristbands. They can be purchased at Once Upon A Sign in Hendersonville NC. Adam also sells them on Ability Shirts’ website. He hopes to have a retail storefront in the future to sell more products, and to hire on other talented young men and women with unique abilities.Ability Shirts also helps to support local groups working with students who have unique abilities. Adam finds it important to give back to the community that is currently helping him establish his nonprofit. in 2013 Ability Shirts donated $181.88 to seven local autistic classrooms in Henderson County. Starting in 2014 Ability Shirts is Donating a portion of our proceeds to The Gerard House, a local preschool dedicated to serving children with autism. Ability Shirts also sponsors the Ability Award, an award that recognizes people with unique abilities who have made a positive contribution to their local community. Adam presented the very first Ability Award in October during an event at Mike’s on Main, for which City of Hendersonville Mayor Barbara Volk was present. Anyone with unique abilities is encouraged to apply for the award by completing the application on the Ability Shirts website. Adam has some advice for those with unique abilities, “Anyone who thinks they are disabled should get up, go outside, and take a stroll,” he says. “Its a beautiful day to have unique abilities!”
