Press release from Connect Enka:
Hominy Valley Elementary School will once again be participating in National Bike to School Day on May 4th marking the fourth consecutive year of this spring event. New bike racks were installed at the school thanks to the $1,000 dollar grant from the Blue Ridge Bicycle Club and at a generous price from Motion Makers Bicycle Shop. The first 100 children will receive a T-shirt thanks to the premier sponsor of this event – Southeastern Container – as well are other supporting sponsors within the community. In support of Earth Day and at the suggestion of Southeastern Container, the shirts are made in part from recycled plastic bottles. Further, Julie Wunder Norris, former WLOS meteorologist and current Runninginaskirt.com blogger, will greet students as they arrive at the school.
“We are so thankful for the Blue Ridge Bicycle Club and their generous support of our Bike and Walk to School program. The bike racks provide a convenient location for kids to park their bikes,” event organizer and Connect Enka president Garrett Artz stated. The three bike racks funded by the grant have a capacity to park 54 bikes. “We are building for a future where sidewalks and bike paths will provide a safe and easy way for families to choose the healthiest option for getting to the school.”
The first 100 students and a limited number of parents will receive a Connect Enka T-shirt that contains material made from recycled Coca-Cola bottles. Premier Sponsor Southeastern Container makes the bottles here in Enka and it can take five recycled 2-liter bottles to make one T-shirt.
Julie Wunder Norris will serve as this year’s celebrity host. She stated she was “happy to help” with the event as it supports her interest in finding a healthy and balanced life. The Emmy-award winning meteorologist writes about fitness and fashion on her blog, “Running with a skirt” where she describes herself as a “fitness enthusiast” and where she chronicles her attempt to “find healthy balance with a smile.”
Connect Enka incorporated to support the implementation of the Hominy Creek Corridor that is expected to run from the Hominy Valley Park to Brevard Road (NC 191) near the intersection with Pond Road. The active transportation advocacy organization recently partnered with Active Routes to School North Carolina to assess five Enka District Schools on their potential to make it safe and easy for children who live in close proximity to be able to walk or bike to their school.
