In a resolution approved Monday night, the Henderson County School Board called for the N.C. General Assembly to rescind provisions in the Appropriations Act of 2013 that retroactively eliminate teachers’ “career status,” or tenure, according to a story in the Hendersonville Times-News.
The board’s resolution further questioned the legality of mandating that school boards identify only 25 percent of its teachers to receive four-year contracts in lieu of career status.
The General Assembly passed a budget bill last year that abolishes tenure, enacted in 1971 to protect educators from being dismissed or demoted without due process, and requires school systems to identify 25 percent of their teachers who have three consecutive years of experience to receive four-year contracts and $500 annual raises instead.
