Indivisible Asheville/WNC (“Indivisible AVL”), a nonprofit grassroots group focused on defending democracy with informed community action, will host two events this fall as the launch of a year-long voter engagement campaign.
Indivisible AVL will host a kick-off event “Let’s All Vote: 2020 Starts Now” on Tuesday, Nov. 5, from 6:00-7:30 p.m. at Stephens Lee Recreation Center, 30 Washington Carver Avenue in Asheville. The kick-off will include a presentation about proven strategies for getting voters to the polls in 2020 and ways volunteers can get involved. Indivisible AVL leaders will provide information and training on nonpartisan, issue-based canvassing and an innovative and easy-to-use Relational Voter app that allows volunteers to work in their own social networks to engage voters.
On Sunday, Dec. 8, from 2:00-5:00 p.m., Indivisible AVL will be part of a statewide day of action coordinated by a coalition of grassroots groups across the state. Volunteer canvassers will meet at 2:00 p.m. at Francine Delaney New School at 119 Brevard Road in West Asheville. The event will begin with a short training in nonpartisan canvassing, followed by door-to-door voter outreach in nearby neighborhoods and a debriefing wrap-up with free food and drink at Westville Pub, 777 Haywood Road. No prior canvassing experience is needed, although advance registration is required. Canvassers can go out singly or in pairs.

Indivisible AVL Steering Committee member Brenda Murphree says, “We are so excited to launch our ‘2020 Starts Now’ campaign and begin engaging voters around the issues they care about—the issues that will get them to the polls, such as health care, jobs, climate change, education, racial equity, LGBTQ rights, and more. We know what works—direct voter engagement—and we’re educating and organizing our neighbors to come together and create big change for our community, our state, and our country in 2020. We know many people are frustrated with the direction things are going and we invite folks to come out and learn more about how we can have our voices heard.”
