WAYNESVILLE, NC – Walk in the footsteps of Horace Kephart along the spine of the Appalachian Mountains as Friends of the Smokies hikes to Charlies Bunion. Join Friends on Tuesday, August 12 on the next Classic Hike of the Smokies on the Appalachian Trail, led by hiking guide and author, Danny Bernstein.
The August Classic Hike to Charlies Bunion is 8 miles in length with a total elevation gain of 1,800 feet. This hike is moderately difficult and hikers will be rewarded with stunning views of North Carolina and Tennessee along the way.
On this hike, participants will learn how donations made to Friends of the Smokies benefit priority projects along the Appalachian Trail, including bear cables, improvements to backcountry shelters, and the A.T. Ridgerunner program. The Appalachian Trail runs approximately 72 miles through Great Smoky Mountains National Park on its path from Georgia to Maine.
August’s Classic Hike of the Smokies is $10 for members and $35 for non-members who will receive a one-year membership. Carpools from Asheville, Maggie Valley, and Gatlinburg available. Times and locations given upon registration.
