NCDENR says less trash going to NC landfills

According to the Asheville Citizen-Times, Experts say the sour economy and increased recycling efforts are behind a drop in the amount of garbage North Carolinians throw away.

The statewide disposal rate fell below one ton per person in 2010-11 for the first time in 20 years, according to a report issued by the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

Buncombe is among 50 counties that saw their tonnage decline.
