Press release from the Chinese Acupuncture & Herbology Clinic:
The Chinese Acupuncture & Herbology Clinic (CAC), established by Mary Cissy Majebe, OMD in 1985, has steadily grown to become a flourishing medical practice that serves the needs of the Western North Carolina community. The CAC was a pivotal player in helping to establish North Carolina Acupuncture Licensing Board. By 1989 the clinic had nestled into its space in the beautiful Victorian Montford office where the practice matured into a major center for healing in our community. Chinese medicine has become a preferred mode of health care for many Asheville and surrounding area residents.
This increased demand for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (AOM) as a source of medical care resulted in the sudden investigation by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (NC-SBI), which was initiated by a now closed local hospital. The NC-SBI demanded that all patients leave, confiscating all patient records, as “evidence,” including diplomas and licenses. This marked the beginning of a long struggle between the North Carolina Board of Medical Examiners, the state of North Carolina and Dr. Majebe. This landmark event would end with the North Carolina Legislature creating the North Carolina Acupuncture Licensing Board (NCALB). The NCALB was assigned the task of developing the rules and regulation governing the practice of acupuncture in North Carolina. In the decade following, the CAC would then expand to both its Hendersonville and Waynesville offices.
The dedication and perseverance of the CAC and the Asheville community helped create the space and energy for a school of AOM. Daoist Traditions College of Chinese Medical Arts of Asheville, was founded in 2003. In its 12 year history, it has taught 243 students the art of healing through a rigorous 4 year program and nine graduating classes. The school has grown into a highly sought out school of AOM because of its dedication to the revival of Classical Chinese medicine. In 2013 Daoist Traditions also began working with Traditions Acupuncture Foundation to establish an acupuncture clinic providing care to the medically underserved community of Asheville at the Haywood Street Congregation.
In 30 years, the Chinese Acupuncture and Herbology Clinic has grown to a group of eight dedicated professionals, making it the largest private group of Chinese medicine practitioners in the southeastern United states. Together, they provide more than 14,000 acupuncture sessions each year and have assisted thousands of people on their journey to health and well–being. The CAC family has brought healing to not only the WNC area, but to patients throughout the nation. The CAC has continued its path of sharing this healing art with the community through the use of educational outlets, legislative advocacy and the expansion in insurance coverage. It is the first acupuncture practice to become a preferred provider for local employer health plans including Mission Health, and Warren Wilson College. They continue to work towards expanding the access to acupuncture services through major medical health plans and strive to make acupuncture accessible to everyone by establishing the medical procedure as an essential healthcare benefit.
Please join us in celebrating the Chinese Acupuncture Clinic’s 30 years of dedication to the WNC area by joining us for family centered community activities on Sunday October 18th from 3-6pm at our 369 Montford Avenue, Asheville, NC 28801 location. Activities will include a lion dance, face painting, pumpkin painting, food, music, and dancing.
