Press release from the Edward Buncombe Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution:
On March 3rd, 2022 a diverse group of citizens proudly hoisted an American flag at the ABCCM Veterans Restoration Quarters. The new flag was donated by the Edward Buncombe Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. This DAR chapter has a flag program, chaired by Jennifer Kirkpatrick, which offers to replace aged or damaged American flags and to properly dispose of the old ones. It was a late winter spring like day and residents of the VRQ helped raise the flag and share with the ladies a moment of pride.
The VRQ is a 246-bed housing facility serving male veterans who are experiencing homelessness in Buncombe County and is a division of Asheville Buncombe Community Christian Ministry (ABCCM), a nonprofit organization working in Buncombe County to address poverty, hunger, homelessness, and health care access. Through programs of stabilization, life skills training, education and reintegration the VRQ is proud to report that 8 out of 10 veterans leave with a living wage job and permanent housing.
The Edward Buncombe Chapter was organized on November 4, 1903 and is today 100 + member strong. This DAR chapter under the guidance of Regent Trula Boyd and Service to Veterans chair Judy Martin has provided clothing, masks, reading glasses, gloves and tools after the recent storms, and paint for inside apartments. They have placed American flags and Christmas wreaths on our NC Veteran’s Cemetery, made lap cushions for our veterans and are one of the sponsors for “Que For A Cause” to benefit VRQ. For our female veterans residing at Transformation Village they purchased VISA debit cards for their personal use, gave stamped Christmas cards and recently spring potted flowers for their rooms.
On March 3rd, with salutes and hands on hearts, this group of veterans and women descended from revolutionary veterans proudly raised the new flag and said the Pledge of Allegiance.
The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution was founded in 1890 to promote historic preservation, education and patriotism. Its members are descended from the patriots who won American independence during the Revolutionary War.
On October 5, 2019, DAR surpassed a total of one million members who have joined the Society since the founding. The DAR supports “nationalism” and we all know what that means….awkward.
