March Against Monsanto festival Oct. 13

March Against Monsanto Asheville announced today the 2nd “March Against Monsanto ” in the streets of Asheville on OCTOBER 13TH -this is ONE DAY LATER than the international set date of Oct. 12th, since no area in Asheville was available on that day . Starting in Pack Sq at 1:30, there will be an orderly short March around the City Hall and back to the Square. The after-Rally & Festival in Pack Square Park will feature speakers, live music, local retail vendors, Non GMO/ local Food vendors, and information tables. Louise Heath, an organizer of the event, says she and other Committee members were inspired to organize the first, and now this second March because of concern about a multinational chemical corporation wielding so much power over our food supply and our government. “The people have to stand together to protect our farmers, the environment and of course our health, and that of our children and all inhabitants of the Planet. Together we have the power to implement change.” she says.

A Rally featuring speakers and live music at Pack Square Park will immediately follow the March at 2:30 pm. Local live bands include Free Radio, Pipapelli Blues, The River Rats, and also Tuatha Dea from Gaitlinburg TN. The rally will feature local speakers from the Global Justice Ecology Project on GE Trees, local farmer Robyn Cammer from Frog Holler Organiks Biodynamic Farms, City Councilman Cecil Bothwell of Bee City USA, and Dr. Erik Madsen.

Tami Monroe Canal, lead organizer and creator of the now-viral March Against Monsanto Facebook page , says she was inspired to start the movement to protect her two daughters. “I feel Monsanto threatens their generation’s health, fertility and longevity. I couldn't sit by idly, waiting for someone else to do something.”

Its clear that the citizens of Asheville won’t sit idly by either; the March Against Monsanto has received a huge wave of support throughout the community and online since the concepts’ inception in the early Spring. The local Asheville committee states “Asheville is joining an international movement to stand up against Biotech goliaths like Monsanto that are flexing their power around the world; destroying small farms, devastating biodiversity, forcing dependence on chemical agriculture, and operating with almost no transparency or government oversight. This is a celebration to remind Monsanto that the world is watching- we are citizens, not blind consumers. We are so grateful for the strong local awareness of this most critical issue.”
